Total Health Management
Benefit Services Group’s (BSG) commitment to cost-containment strategies revolves around the implementation of wellness programs and member behavior change. Our philosophy is if members don’t adjust their lifestyles, eventually all medical plans will become unaffordable.
We are an expert in developing wellness and disease intervention programs and on-site services which improve the health of employees’ lives while also integrating your medical and pharmacy costs. We believe this is the most effective strategy for a long-term solution in managing employee health and welfare programs. To help alleviate the impacts of an aging workforce, BSG will evaluate and assist with design improvements of the existing programs to include more disease based outcome measures along with information on how to keep the healthy population healthy and engaged in continuing participation. More emphasis needs to be placed on the ‘healthy’ 80% of the population who are not driving large claims. BSG also suggests conducting an employee survey and/or focus groups to identify what members’ perceptions, concerns, or issues are with their health program as well as any individual health needs.
Lifestyle and Behavioral Impacts –BSG knows most employers are facing several risk factors within their employee population, such as diabetes, smoking, and obesity. We work with the employer and its employees to focus on making positive changes in lifestyle choices which in turn affects claim costs and productivity levels.
Many employers are turning to corporate wellness programs to help control healthcare costs. By working with specialized wellness companies and insurance carriers, we are able to deliver wellness programs designed with your employee population in mind. From online health education resources to comprehensive programs inclusive of health screenings, personal health risk assessments, and health coaching, BSG can help you design a program encouraging your employees to engage in healthier lifestyles, resulting in lowering health risk factors and increasing employee productivity and morale.
Behavioral impacts, such as tobacco usage, obesity, and lack of physical activity, are key drivers to an employer’s claims costs. These factors can be successfully managed through clinical programs, education, effective communication and the correct incentives.
BSG proactively works with our clients to implement and educate their employees about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle rather than suggesting standard cost-sharing recommendations. Through our communication programs, we inform employees and their families on how to achieve behavior changes for an improved quality of life.
Our wellness resources include product and vendor information, newsletters, wellness program ideas, incentive strategies, onsite services, and additional information on how a wellness program fits as part of a Total Health Cost Management strategy.
Our Total Health Cost Management strategy includes:
- Planning a Wellness Program
- Assessment Stage
- Health Risk Assessments (HRAs)
- Health Screening (biometric screening)
- Aggregate results
- Coaching and Educational Services
- Smoking Cessation
- Weight Management
- Disease Management
- Stress Management
- Employee Engagement Programs
- Measuring Results and ROI
The first step in introducing change to employees is to understand their personal perceptions of health care and evaluate what stage of behavioral change they are in. To implement this initial step, BSG evaluates and implements health risk assessments (HRA) along with health screenings. Through the HRA and health screenings, an individual can become familiar with their health care score and understand what they need to do to improve their score and health factors over time.
The next step for the client is to receive and evaluate their aggregate health report outlining key areas of concern within their employee population. The results of this report will determine the next level of wellness-oriented activities for BSG to design, create and implement.
Within the marketplace, BSG also reviews medical plans where the HRA and health screening are incentives built into the employer’s plan design. A member can reduce their deductible or receive flex-spending dollars towards medical services if they complete both activities.
